The Kind of Flag I Would Make

Director, Deviser, & Live Maker | 2022
Milton Court Studio Theatre |
The Guildhall School (London, England)
The Kind of Flag I Would Make seeks to answer the question “What is queer joy?”, using the symbolism for each colour of the original pride flag designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978 as a guiding parameter for enquiry. This work is a product of collaborative devising around an original stimulus, The Strangers' Case monologue from Sir Thomas More, through which we discovered a sense of political purpose and urgency. Ultimately influenced by zines and Katie Mitchell's work, The Kind of Flag I Would Make embraces the physical and grass-root quality of the making process in our own multimedia manifestation of the beauty, love, and happiness that floods the LGBTQIA+ community.
A theatre stage with many suspended, colorful canvases in the air. 4 canvases are being projected onto showing montages of queer art, music, and media representation throughout modern history. 3 performers work on stage painting large, unframed canvases.
The creative team stands with their backs to the camera, each displaying customized art and messages on the back of their boiler suit costumes. Behind them are 3 colorfully painted canvases reading "This is", "Queer", and "Joy".
A large cyclorama in front of the stage displays a photo of the bottom half of two cartoon buts reading "bum-ping uglies."
